The Lapse Triggers a License Suspension
Maine's Bureau of Motor Vehicles suspends your driver's license when you drive without insurance or allow your policy to lapse while a vehicle is registered in your name. The suspension is automatic once the BMV receives notice from your carrier that coverage ended. You do not receive advance warning before the suspension takes effect.
Reinstatement requires proof of current insurance, payment of a $50 reinstatement fee, and—critically—an SR-22 Certificate of Insurance filing from your new carrier. The SR-22 is not optional. Maine law treats uninsured driving as a financial-responsibility violation, and the BMV will not lift the suspension without the SR-22 on file. Most drivers discover the SR-22 requirement only after calling the BMV to ask why their license is still suspended after they bought new coverage.

SR-22 Filing Is Required, Duration Is Not Published
Maine requires SR-22 filing after uninsured driving, but the state does not publish a fixed duration for how long you must maintain it. The BMV's reinstatement notice will state whether SR-22 is required, but it typically does not specify an end date. In practice, carriers and the BMV treat the filing as a multi-year obligation—often three years—but the exact term is set case-by-case.
The SR-22 itself is a certificate your insurance carrier files electronically with the BMV. It proves you carry at least Maine's minimum liability limits: $50,000 per person for bodily injury, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. If your policy lapses or cancels while the SR-22 is active, your carrier notifies the BMV immediately, and your license is suspended again.
Carriers charge a filing fee to submit the SR-22. Some carriers file the SR-22 at no additional cost, but most add the fee to your first premium payment or bill it separately.
The BMV will not reinstate your license until the SR-22 is on file, even if you have already paid the $50 fee and bought new coverage.
What You Must File to Reinstate

First, you must purchase a new auto insurance policy from a carrier licensed to write SR-22 in Maine. Not all carriers write SR-22 policies, and some that do will not quote drivers with recent lapses. The carrier must agree to file the SR-22 on your behalf before you can proceed. Once the policy is active, the carrier files the SR-22 electronically with the BMV. This filing typically takes one to three business days to appear in the BMV's system.
Second, you must pay the $50 reinstatement fee directly to the BMV. You can pay online, by mail, or in person at a BMV branch office. The BMV will not lift the suspension until both the SR-22 filing and the fee payment are recorded in their system. If you pay the fee before the SR-22 is filed, your license remains suspended until the filing appears. The two requirements must both be met; neither alone is sufficient.
Not All Carriers Write SR-22 Policies
Maine has 16 major carriers licensed to write auto insurance in the state, but not all of them write SR-22 policies. Carriers that do write SR-22 include Geico, Progressive, State Farm, Dairyland, Bristol West, The General, National General, and Farmers. Carriers that do not write SR-22 in Maine include Amica, Nationwide, Travelers, and Hartford.
If your previous carrier does not write SR-22, you must switch carriers to reinstate. Some carriers that write SR-22 will not quote drivers with recent lapses longer than 30 days. Others will quote but charge significantly higher premiums than they would for a driver with continuous coverage. Expect to pay more after a lapse, even with the same carrier.
Dairyland, Bristol West, The General, and National General specialize in non-standard auto insurance and typically quote drivers with lapses, suspensions, and other violations. These carriers often charge higher base premiums than standard-tier carriers, but they are more likely to approve your application. If you cannot get a quote from a standard carrier, start with the non-standard group.
Maine Uninsured Motorist Rate
5.7%
Approximately 5.7% of Maine drivers are uninsured, according to 2023 data. This is below the national average, but it means roughly one in eighteen drivers on Maine roads does not carry the required liability coverage.

How Long the SR-22 Filing Lasts
Maine does not publish a fixed SR-22 duration for uninsured driving violations. The BMV's reinstatement notice may state a duration, or it may not. When no duration is specified, the filing typically remains in effect for three years from the date of reinstatement. Your carrier will notify you when the SR-22 term ends, and you can then switch to a standard policy if you choose.
During the SR-22 period, you must maintain continuous coverage without any lapses. If your policy cancels or lapses for non-payment, your carrier notifies the BMV within 24 hours, and your license is suspended again immediately. A second suspension for the same reason resets the SR-22 clock and may extend the filing requirement.
Start With the BMV, Then Compare Carriers
Call the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles at (207) 624-9000 to confirm your suspension status and verify whether SR-22 filing is required. The BMV will tell you whether your license is currently suspended, what fees are owed, and whether any other holds exist on your record. Do not assume the SR-22 is required until the BMV confirms it—some short lapses do not trigger the filing requirement.
Once you confirm SR-22 is required, request quotes from at least three carriers that write SR-22 in Maine. Provide each carrier with your license number, the dates of the lapse, and any other violations on your record. Carriers price SR-22 policies differently, and the cheapest carrier for a standard policy may not be the cheapest for an SR-22 policy. Compare the total premium including the filing fee, not just the base rate. Once you select a carrier and the policy is active, confirm with the carrier that the SR-22 has been filed electronically. Wait two to three business days, then call the BMV to verify the filing appears in their system before you pay the reinstatement fee.
