Maine Multi-Vehicle Coverage Mandates

You just added a second car to your household and discovered that Maine's minimum liability requirements apply to each vehicle separately, not to your policy as a whole. The $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident bodily injury liability, and $25,000 property damage liability the state requires must be carried on every car you insure, and the state-mandated personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage cannot be waived on any vehicle.

This structure matters because many drivers assume a multi-car policy pools coverage across all vehicles, allowing one car's higher limits to offset another's lower ones. Maine law does not work that way. Each vehicle must independently meet the state's minimum requirements, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles verifies compliance per vehicle when you register or renew registration.

Maine requires every vehicle on a multi-car policy to carry the state minimums individually, not pooled across the policy.

Maine Liability Minimum Per Vehicle

$50,000/$100,000/$25,000

Every car on your policy must carry at least $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. The state does not permit lower limits on any vehicle, regardless of how many cars you insure together.

How Multi-Car Policies Meet State Requirements

A multi-car policy in Maine lists each vehicle separately on the declarations page, and each vehicle carries its own coverage limits. When you add a second or third car, the carrier assigns the state-required liability, PIP, and uninsured motorist coverage to that vehicle individually. You cannot reduce one car's liability to the minimum and raise another's to compensate: every vehicle must meet or exceed the $50,000/$100,000/$25,000 floor.

The multi-car discount most carriers offer reduces the premium for insuring multiple vehicles on one policy, but it does not change the per-vehicle coverage structure. The discount applies to the total policy premium after each vehicle's coverage is priced separately. Maine's requirement that PIP and uninsured motorist coverage be included on every vehicle unless explicitly rejected in writing means you cannot selectively drop those coverages on a second or third car to lower cost.

If you own four vehicles but drive only two regularly, all four must carry the state minimums if they are registered and plated. Maine does not offer a stored-vehicle or occasional-use exemption from the liability and mandatory coverage requirements. Comprehensive-only coverage without liability is not sufficient for a registered vehicle in Maine.

Maine requires PIP and uninsured motorist coverage on every vehicle unless you reject them in writing. You cannot drop these coverages on a second or third car without a signed waiver.

Adding a Vehicle Mid-Term

When you buy a car and add it to your existing Maine policy, the new vehicle is covered under your current policy's terms for a limited grace period, typically 14 to 30 days depending on the carrier. After that window, the carrier must formally add the vehicle and re-rate the policy.

During the grace period, the new vehicle is covered at the same liability and coverage levels as your existing cars. You must notify the carrier within the grace window and provide the VIN, make, model, and garaging address. If you miss the window and file a claim on the unreported vehicle, the carrier can deny coverage on the grounds that the vehicle was not listed on the policy at the time of loss.

Adding a vehicle mid-term re-rates the entire policy, not just the new car. The carrier recalculates the multi-car discount, adjusts the base rate for the household's total vehicle count, and applies any new rating factors the added vehicle introduces. If the new car is a higher-risk model or is garaged at a different address, the policy premium can increase more than the cost of insuring that one vehicle alone.

Combining Policies After Marriage or Move

When two households merge and each person brings a car with an existing policy, combining both policies into one multi-car policy usually lowers the total premium, but not always. The combined policy's rate depends on both drivers' records, the vehicles' risk profiles, and whether the cars are garaged at the same address. Maine carriers typically require all vehicles on a multi-car policy to be garaged at the same location, and a vehicle garaged elsewhere may not qualify for the multi-car discount.

If one spouse has a clean record and the other has a recent at-fault accident or moving violation, the combined policy's rate reflects both drivers' histories. Some carriers allow you to exclude a high-risk driver from the policy if that driver has other insurance, but Maine law requires every licensed household member to be either listed on the policy or formally excluded. An unlisted household member who drives a car on your policy can trigger a coverage denial at claim time.

Before combining policies, compare the combined-policy quote against keeping two separate policies. In some cases, two policies with separate multi-car discounts cost less than one combined policy, especially if the drivers' risk profiles differ significantly or if one household's vehicles are much more expensive to insure than the other's.

Maine Multi-Car Carriers

16 carriers

At least 16 carriers write multi-vehicle policies in Maine, including Allstate, Geico, Progressive, State Farm, and USAA. Not all carriers offer the same multi-car discount structure, and some cap the discount at a certain number of vehicles.

Structuring Coverage Across Multiple Vehicles

When you insure three or more vehicles, you can structure coverage levels differently across the cars based on each vehicle's value and use. A newer car financed through a lender must carry collision and comprehensive coverage to satisfy the loan agreement, but an older paid-off car can carry liability only if its value does not justify the cost of physical-damage coverage. Maine does not require collision or comprehensive on any vehicle, only the liability, PIP, and uninsured motorist minimums.

Raising liability limits above the state minimum on all vehicles costs less than raising them on just one or two, because carriers price higher limits at a lower per-dollar rate than the base minimum. The incremental cost of higher limits across all vehicles is typically smaller than the cost difference between minimum and mid-level coverage on a single car.

Compare Multi-Car Carriers in Maine

Carriers price multi-car policies differently based on how they weight the multi-vehicle discount, how they rate each vehicle's risk, and whether they cap the discount after a certain number of cars. Geico, Progressive, and State Farm all write multi-car policies in Maine, but their discount structures and base rates vary. A carrier with a smaller multi-car discount percentage but a lower base rate can produce a lower total premium than a carrier advertising a larger discount on a higher base.

Request quotes from at least three carriers and compare the total policy premium, not just the per-vehicle cost or the discount percentage. Provide each carrier with the same coverage levels, deductibles, and driver information so the quotes reflect true rate differences rather than coverage mismatches. Maine law requires carriers to file their rates with the Bureau of Insurance, but filed rates are not public, so comparison shopping is the only way to identify the lowest cost for your household's vehicle count and driver profile.
