Why Liability-Only for Multiple Vehicles

You own two or three older cars, each worth less than a few thousand dollars. Full coverage premiums would exceed what you'd recover in a total-loss claim. You need state-minimum liability to register and drive legally, but you're paying for collision and comprehensive on vehicles where the math doesn't work. Liability-only makes sense when the vehicle's value falls below the point where physical-damage premiums justify the coverage.

Maine requires $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 bodily injury per accident, $25,000 property damage, plus personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage. Liability-only means you carry those mandatory coverages and drop collision and comprehensive. Your vehicles stay legal. You stop paying for coverage that costs more than the car is worth. The multi-car discount still applies when every vehicle sits on the same policy, even when none carry physical-damage coverage.

Maine Minimum Liability Limits

$50,000 / $100,000 / $25,000

Maine mandates $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. PIP and uninsured motorist coverage are also required. Liability-only policies meet these minimums without collision or comprehensive.

What Liability-Only Actually Covers

Liability coverage pays for damage you cause to another person or their property. Bodily injury liability covers medical bills, lost wages, and legal defense when you injure someone in an at-fault accident. Property damage liability covers repairs to the other driver's vehicle, fence, building, or other property you hit. Maine's $50,000/$100,000/$25,000 minimums are the floor: you can buy higher limits, and you should if your assets exceed those thresholds.

Personal injury protection covers your own medical expenses and lost wages regardless of fault, up to the policy limit. Uninsured motorist coverage pays when an at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient limits. Both are mandatory in Maine. Liability-only drops collision (which pays for damage to your own vehicle in an at-fault crash) and comprehensive (which pays for theft, vandalism, weather, and animal strikes). Your car is not covered for physical damage under a liability-only policy.

When you add a second or third vehicle to a liability-only policy, each vehicle carries the same liability, PIP, and UM coverages. The multi-car discount reduces the per-vehicle premium when all vehicles sit on one policy. Dropping collision and comprehensive on every vehicle lowers the total premium further, but the discount applies to the liability portion regardless of whether physical-damage coverage is present.

The multi-car discount requires every vehicle on the same policy. Separate policies for each car forfeit the discount even when all carry liability-only.

Adding a Second Vehicle to Liability-Only

Most carriers allow you to add a vehicle to an existing liability-only policy mid-term. The new vehicle must be reported within the carrier's grace period, typically 14 to 30 days, or coverage may be denied at claim time.

Contact your carrier as soon as you acquire the second vehicle. Provide the VIN, year, make, model, and garaging address. The carrier will add the vehicle to your policy, apply the multi-car discount retroactively to the effective date, and bill the prorated premium for the remainder of the term. If you wait beyond the grace period, the carrier may refuse to backdate coverage, leaving the second vehicle uninsured from the purchase date until you report it.

The multi-car discount typically reduces the per-vehicle liability premium by a percentage that varies by carrier. A smaller discount on a lower base rate can beat a larger discount on a higher one, so compare total premiums across carriers rather than discount percentages alone. When both vehicles carry liability-only, the combined premium is lower than two separate policies because the discount applies and because you avoid duplicate policy fees.

Comparing Carriers for Liability-Only Multi-Car Policies

Carriers writing Maine liability-only policies include Allstate, Amica, Auto Club Enterprises, Bristol West, Dairyland, Farmers, Geico, Hartford, Liberty Mutual, National General, Nationwide, Progressive, State Farm, The General, Travelers, and USAA. Not all carriers offer the same multi-car discount structure, and base rates vary significantly. A carrier with a lower liability base rate and a modest multi-car discount may produce a lower total premium than a carrier with a higher base rate and a larger discount.

Request quotes from at least three carriers. Provide identical coverage limits, vehicle details, and driver information to each. Compare the total annual or six-month premium for all vehicles combined, not the per-vehicle breakdown. Some carriers charge a per-policy fee that appears once regardless of vehicle count; others charge per-vehicle fees that scale with the number of cars. The total premium is the only figure that matters.

Carriers in Maine's non-standard tier, such as Bristol West, Dairyland, The General, and National General, often write liability-only policies for drivers with violations, lapses, or non-standard risk profiles. If you have a clean record, compare standard-tier carriers like State Farm, Geico, and Progressive first. If your driving history includes a recent violation or lapse, non-standard carriers may offer lower liability-only rates than standard carriers would quote.

When to Keep Collision on One Vehicle

If one vehicle in your household is newer or worth significantly more than the others, you may choose to carry collision and comprehensive on that vehicle while keeping the others liability-only. The multi-car discount still applies when all vehicles sit on the same policy, even when coverage levels differ. This structure works when one car is financed (the lender requires collision and comprehensive) and the others are paid off and older.

The combined premium will be lower than full coverage on all three, and you'll still receive the multi-car discount.

Liability-only multi-car policies in Maine meet state requirements at the lowest premium when every vehicle sits on one policy and none carry physical-damage coverage. The multi-car discount applies regardless of whether collision and comprehensive are present. Compare at least three carriers writing Maine liability-only policies, request identical coverage limits for all vehicles, and choose the lowest total premium. Add vehicles within the carrier's grace period to avoid coverage gaps. If one vehicle justifies full coverage, keep the others liability-only on the same policy to preserve the discount.
