When Adding a Second Vehicle Raises Coverage Questions
You just bought a second car and need to add it to your insurance. Your household has a clean driving record, no violations, and you want to confirm whether putting both vehicles on one policy saves money—or whether separate policies make sense. The decision hinges on how Maine's coverage requirements apply across multiple vehicles and how the multi-car discount actually works.
Maine requires $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident in bodily injury liability, plus $25,000 in property damage liability on every registered vehicle. The state also mandates personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage. When you add a second vehicle, every coverage requirement applies to that vehicle too—and the way you structure your policy determines whether you qualify for the multi-car discount.

The Multi-Car Discount Requires One Shared Policy
The multi-car discount applies when you insure two or more vehicles on the same policy. It does not apply if you carry separate policies for each vehicle, even if both policies are with the same carrier. The discount is a policy-level benefit, not a per-vehicle credit.
Most carriers require every vehicle on the policy to be garaged at the same address. A car titled to a household member but garaged elsewhere—or titled to someone outside your household—may not qualify for the same-policy discount. If you recently married and each spouse has a separate policy, combining them into one shared policy is typically required to unlock the multi-car discount.
When you add a vehicle mid-term, the carrier re-rates the entire policy rather than simply adding a flat amount. The new premium reflects the combined risk of all vehicles on the policy, which is why adding a second car does not double your premium—the multi-car discount offsets part of the increase.
The multi-car discount only applies when every vehicle sits on one shared policy. Separate policies—even with the same carrier—do not qualify.
How to Add a Second Vehicle to Your Policy

Contact your carrier as soon as you purchase the second vehicle. Provide the VIN, make, model, year, and garaging address. The carrier will re-rate your policy to include the new vehicle and apply the multi-car discount if you now have two or more vehicles on the same policy. If you miss the grace period—typically 14 to 30 days depending on the carrier—the new vehicle may not be covered, and a claim could be denied.
When the carrier re-rates the policy, they recalculate premiums for all vehicles based on the combined risk. A second vehicle with comprehensive and collision coverage will increase your premium more than a second vehicle with liability-only coverage. If the second car is older or driven less frequently, you can choose a higher deductible or drop comprehensive and collision entirely to lower the combined premium.
Maine Coverage Requirements Apply to Every Vehicle
Every vehicle on your policy must meet Maine's minimum liability limits: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident in bodily injury liability, and $25,000 in property damage liability. PIP and uninsured motorist coverage are mandatory on every vehicle as well. You cannot carry full coverage on one vehicle and drop liability on the second—state law requires the same minimum coverage on every registered vehicle.
If you own a third or fourth vehicle, the same requirements apply. A rarely-driven car still needs liability, PIP, and UM coverage to remain registered. Some households choose to register only the vehicles they drive regularly and store the others unregistered, but an unregistered vehicle cannot be driven on public roads.
Comprehensive and collision coverage are optional. If the second vehicle is older and worth less than a few thousand dollars, dropping comprehensive and collision lowers your premium without violating state requirements. You still carry the mandatory liability, PIP, and UM coverage—you simply accept the risk of paying out-of-pocket for damage to the older vehicle.

When Separate Policies Make Sense
Most households save money by combining all vehicles on one shared policy and claiming the multi-car discount. But separate policies can make sense in specific situations. If one household member has a violation or accident on their record and the other has a clean record, splitting the vehicles onto separate policies may lower the combined premium—the clean-record driver avoids the surcharge that would apply if both drivers were rated on the same policy.
If you own a classic car, a high-value vehicle, or a vehicle with specialized use, a separate specialty policy may offer better coverage than adding it to your standard multi-car policy. Specialty policies often have lower premiums for rarely-driven vehicles and offer agreed-value coverage instead of actual cash value.
Compare Carriers That Write Your Household's Vehicles
Sixteen carriers write auto insurance in Maine. Not all carriers offer the same multi-car discount, and not all carriers write the same vehicle types. If you own a classic car, a commercial vehicle, or a high-performance vehicle, confirm the carrier writes that vehicle type before combining policies.
Request quotes from at least three carriers. Provide the VIN, make, model, year, and garaging address for every vehicle you want to insure. Ask each carrier how they calculate the multi-car discount and whether they require all vehicles to be garaged at the same address. Compare the combined premium for all vehicles on one policy against the total cost of separate policies.
